Firearms Permit Application Information

Applications for firearms can be picked up at the Police Department between the hours of 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

There are several different types of firearms applications based on what it is you are applying for. There are specific forms for the following:

  • Initial applications for firearms identification cards;
  • Duplicate I.D. card:
  • Change of address;
  • Lost/stolen card:
  • Permit to purchase (handgun);
  • Permit to carry;
  • Mental health consent form:
  • Voluntary registration form;
Applicants need to be Westampton Township residents.

If you have recently moved into the township, and need a duplicate I.D. card and/or change of address form, please bring your firearms I.D. card with you, as we need to submit requests to the issuing agency/department.

The New Jersey State Police require that all applicants be fingerprinted every two years.

If it has been longer than two years since you have been fingerprinted for a firearms purpose with this department, you will need to be re-fingerprinted. The fee for the fingerprinting is $54.00. This payment must be made at time of service, and has to be a certified check, or money order made out the Division of State Police, S.B.I.

If you fall within the two year window and are interested in obtaining a permit to purchase, you will need to have a criminal history background check done (form SBI212a) submitted through this Department. The fee for this will be $ 18.00, payable to the Division of State Police, S.B.I.

Firearms I.D. card costs: $ 5.00

Permit to purchase: $ 2.00 / each

Registration of firearms purchased legally by you when you resided in another State is voluntary in the State of New Jersey.

No permits are required to purchase a rifle/shotgun, however a firearms I.D. card is needed to purchase any type of firearm, and/or ammunition.

The firearms process for an initial application can be a lengthy process from beginning to end. Please allow 8 to 12 weeks for this application. Unless you hear from this Department, assume that your application is not yet complete. If we have a problem with an application, we will contact you.

Upon completion of your application background, we will contact you via mail to set up an appointment with the Chief of Police.

The Chief of Police must issue all of the firearms I.D. cards/permits.

If you filed an application for firearms and filled out a SBI212a form for a criminal history background check, the process usually takes 8 to 10 weeks.

Once the background check or the fingerprints are sent to the State Police and F.B.I., it is out of our hands until we receive an answer with regard to your background results. This is the point of the process that takes the most time. Please be patient.

If you have any further questions regarding firearms information, do not hesitate to contact the Westampton Police Department at (609) 267-3000, ext 140.

***Most of the forms necessary to be completed are available on the New Jersey State Police website. The forms are in PDF format which you can fill out and print directly from the website, or you can print the forms and fill them out. In either instance, it will save you some time if they are completed prior to coming to Headquarters.***
