Marriage Licenses
Can apply in Township where either the bride or groom reside. You must make an appointment in advance to apply for a license. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 3:30 PM for applications.
If both are from out of state, they must apply in the Township where the marriage is to take place. The license may be used only in that Township.
There is a 72 hour waiting period after the application is made until the license can be issued. This period can be waived by a judge. Make application at least a week in advance of the wedding date to avoid any problems.
Identification is required at the time application is made; a photo drivers license is ideal.
A witness (who is at least 18 years old) must accompany the prospective bride and groom at the time application is made.
A fee of $28.00 (cash only) is due when the license is picked up. We cannot accept checks or credit cards. The license, once issued, is valid for a period of 30 days.
Certified sealed copies of your marriage license can be obtained after the ceremony from the Township in which the marriage took place. There is a charge for this, please call the appropriate municipal building in advance.
Civil Unions
Persons wishing to establish a civil union must not be a party in another Civil Union, Domestic Partnership or Marriage with another individual. However, couples that have already registered as Domestic Partners with each other may enter into a Civil Union.
Must be of the same sex.
Must be at least 18 years of age, except as provided for the consent of minors

Can apply in the Township where either party resides. If neither reside in the state then application must be made in the Township where the civil union is to be performed. The license may be used only in that Township.

The Civil Union is only recognized within the state of New Jersey. There are a few other states that currently recognize Civil Unions, but they have their own requirements that must be met.
Domestic Partnerships
Domestic Partnerships may only be obtained by individuals who are each 62 years of age or older and meet all other requirements. Domestic Partnerships may be obtained by same sex or opposite sex couples.
There is no waiting period. A fee of $28.00 (cash only) is collected at the time application is made.
Domestic partnerships may be applied for in any municipality in New Jersey, there are no residency requirements.
The applicants must complete an Affidavit of Domestic Partnership. The Affidavit must be completed and signed by both applicants at the same time, in the presence of a notary public. The Affidavit is then filed with the Local Registrar. Partnerships are not considered registered until the Affidavit has been filed with the Registrarˇ¦s office and the Certificate of Domestic Partnership has been issued. |
